Unlocking the potential of wind energy is at the heart of European policy to achieve climate neutrality and overcome risks to energy security. In Bulgaria, the development of the sector is lagging because of a number of management and regulatory problems that undermine the sustainability and viability of investments. However, Bulgaria has a huge wind resource both on land and in the Black Sea, with various long-term scenarios for the development of Bulgaria's electricity sector showing that the installed wind RES capacity could reach more than 11 GW by 2050.
Together with the Austrian Institute of Technology, the Center for the Study of Democracy prepared an in-depth study of the future potential for the development of wind energy in Bulgaria by area based on geospatial analysis, which reveals both the opportunities and the limitations to investments in wind farms. The main regulatory, administrative and technical obstacles to the implementation of the projects in the priority areas are also indicated, and some specific measures to promote investments in the sector are also indicated.
The results of the research will be presented during a round table, which will be held on September 26, 2023 (Tuesday) at 11 a.m. in the Grand Hotel Millennium Sofia.
