On January 5, 2023, Prof. Encho Popov, an outstanding Bulgarian inventor in the field of electrical engineering, died. Prof. Encho Popov is a long-time member of BASEL.
He was born on December 18, 1935 in Tsar Kaloyan. He graduated from the Technical University in Sofia, majoring in Electrical Machines.
Prof. Popov is an outstanding specialist and inventor in the field of electrical engineering. He worked as the head of the scientific section and deputy director of the scientific department at the Institute of Electrical Industry. He is the creator of over 100 inventions. Through his developments and inventions, Prof. Popov broke the established world standards of 3 percent implementation of inventions.
Over the years, large-scale and original developments in the field of automotive alternators and starters, spindle and high-torque motors with permanent magnets for metal-cutting machines with digital program control, electric motors for computing equipment, electric car motors have been created under his leadership. He worked in close cooperation with the Institute of Metallurgy, Technologies and Facilities "Acad. A. Balevski" - BAS, as well as with the Technical University in Sofia.
On the basis of these developments, large productions were deployed in the electrotechnical industry system, in which more than 30 percent of Prof. Popov's inventions were implemented. Bulgaria is ranked first in the world, ahead of the USA, Germany and Japan, in the production of spindle and high-torque motors.
According to his idea, the Zhetmag facility was patented and produced at the Institute of Metals Technology "Acad. A. Balevski" - BAS, which was well received in the industry of the USA and other countries.
In 1997, he was included in the Golden Book of Bulgarian Inventors.
In 2011, he was granted a patent in the USA, according to which an American company buys from Bulgaria the most powerful alternators in the world.
For 2012, he was named Inventor of the Year in the field of electronics and electrical engineering.
In 2014, he was awarded the Sword of Kubrat by the Electric Vehicle Cluster for creating a basic patented electric motor for electric cars with competitive parameters of the electric motors of the leading companies in the world.
In 2016, by presidential decree, he was awarded the "Stara planina" order, 1st degree.

Bright memory!
