On July 14, 2026, the Bulgarian Association of Electrical Engineering and Electronics (BASEL), represented by Eng. Orlin Dimitrov, held a working meeting with a delegation of the International Energy and Technology Development Support Organization (IETDSO).
The delegation was led by Dr. Seiki Soromoto, a distinguished nuclear engineer from the University of Tokyo with many years of experience in the TOSHIBA Corporation. His experience includes not only strategic planning, but also critical management in extreme situations. Dr. Soromoto was a consultant to the Japanese Prime Minister during the Fukushima nuclear crisis in 2011. The delegation also included Yoshihisa Toyosaki (advisor on smart city strategies), Yoichi Kaneko (advisor on economic and financial strategies) and Kuach Nin Tung (advisor on international exchange).
During the visit, the parties outlined concrete steps for in-depth technological and academic cooperation:
Nuclear Energy and SMR: The focus was on the development of joint research projects for Small Modular Reactors (SMR) between Japanese and Bulgarian universities. IETDSO experts expressed readiness for consulting support as an independent third party for the optimization of strategic projects.
Innovation, Data and AI: The delegation highlighted Bulgaria’s potential for the development of high-tech sectors, especially in the direction of AI, data centers and the semiconductor industry, as a key path for future economic integration.
Smart Cities: An agreement was reached to present successful Japanese models for urban infrastructure and energy efficiency to the National Association of Municipalities in Bulgaria (NAMB).
The meeting confirmed the need for closer ties between industry and academia. The parties committed to working with leading experts from Bulgaria, who will play a key role in the transfer of knowledge and innovation.
The two sides agreed to maintain working communication in order to move towards practical implementation of the identified projects and to facilitate direct contact between Bulgarian enterprises and the IETDSO expert network.
